Tips and tricks to speed up your home Wi-Fi

Boost spotty internet connection

Don’t let Wi-Fi slow you down at home.

Few tech issues are more frustrating than slow or spotty Wi-Fi. Try these tweaks to your router to speed up your browsing and streaming.

Move the router

Tucking your router inside a cabinet or placing it near other electronics can interfere with the signal and weaken your wireless coverage. Keep it in a central spot in your home, in an open area, and away from other devices.

If you’ve got a large house and are struggling to get strong reception in all corners, investing in a Wi-Fi signal booster like Google Wifi will help.

Secure your network

If your Wi-Fi doesn’t have a password, unwanted visitors can access it and slow down your connection. To protect your network, go to your router’s admin page by typing the IP address into a web browser on your computer. Choose WPA2 as the security level and enter a strong password.

If you still want to have easy access for your guests, most Wi-Fi routers have an option to create a guest network that allows guests to easily access your Wi-Fi but have restricted download speeds.

Update the software

Just like the software on your smartphone or computer, your router’s software (also called firmware) needs regular updates to fix bugs and improve performance. Go to the router’s admin page and look for a firmware update option.

Updating your firmware can be a tricky process, it’s best to get in touch with one of our Tech Specialists who’ll guide you through the process.

Try a different frequency

Your router might get overloaded if too many devices in your home are connected to one frequency at the same time.

There are two major Wi-Fi frequencies: 2.4ghz and 5ghz, which each have their own strengths and weaknesses. There are also multiple channels on each frequency, and choosing a less crowded channel can vastly improve your connection.
